Every October, the world observes Breast Cancer Awareness Month, also known as “Pink October.” The campaign began in the United States in 1985, launched as a partnership between the American Cancer Society and a pharmaceutical company to promote mammography as the most effective tool for early detection. Over the years, the pink ribbon became the international symbol of breast cancer awareness, and October turned into a global movement of education and solidarity.
Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women worldwide, with over 2.3 million new cases in 2022. Breast Cancer Awareness Month campaigns encourage women to learn about risk factors and seek regular screenings. Just as importantly, the month is a reminder that breast cancer affects not only those diagnosed but also their families, friends, and communities.
Pink October reminds us that awareness saves lives. According to the American Cancer Society, when detected early, breast cancer has a 90% or higher five-year survival rate. Additionally, when we talk about it, we break down fear and stigma. We encourage more women to feel less alone in their journey.
This month, in addition to increasing awareness, is dedicated to compassion. Communities band together to offer solidarity. Each of us may contribute to the ongoing challenge by sharing credible information, checking in on loved ones, and supporting local and global organizations.
TP Women is our global program dedicated to addressing the challenges faced by women and promoting women's empowerment. Through TP Women, we support initiatives that address women’s health, career development, mentorship, and community engagement. TP Women plays a central role in bringing Pink October to life, organizing campaigns, events, and conversations that raise awareness about breast cancer. We are happy to highlight some of the standout initiatives from our local TP Women teams.
TP Women in Greece
For the eighth consecutive year, TP partnered with the Panhellenic Association of Women with Breast Cancer, Alma Zois, to become the Volunteers’ Sponsor of “Race for the Cure.”
This inspiring event in Greece brought together thousands of people to raise awareness, celebrate survivors, and support life-saving research. Once again, we invited our TP Team to participate in whichever way felt most meaningful by running, walking, or volunteering to make the day possible. The response was overwhelming: more than 600 TP employees joined, showcasing their passion, empathy, and strong sense of community.
Beyond the race, TP continues its Pink October actions in Greece with a strong commitment to women’s health, offering free breast ultrasounds to all employees and extending 1,000 free ultrasounds to women outside our organization.
TP Women in Spain
TP paid for the race bibs for employees who participated in women’s races held in Madrid and Coruña, Spain. These races had a goal to raise awareness and provide support for causes directly affecting women, including breast cancer, gender violence, social inclusion, and the promotion of sport. In total, 140 female participants joined the previous races. An upcoming race is slated to take place in Zaragoza City, where 116 employees are expected to join.
TP Women in Italy:
In May, TP Women came together to participate in “Race for the Cure” in Italy, with 120 TP employees running and walking in solidarity to raise awareness about the importance of breast cancer prevention. Their presence at the event was a powerful expression of unity, strength, and support for a cause that touches countless lives.
We’re incredibly happy to see our employees coming together for a shared cause, and we look forward to sharing more inspiring moments from our TP Women teams throughout Pink October.
